WORTHY CAUSES

Some of the organizations we love and learn from

POOR PEOPLE’S CAMPAIGN

There are at least 140 million people in the country who are impacted by the interlocking injustices of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism and the false narrative of Christian nationalism. The Poor People’s Campaign believes that nonviolent struggle has the power to end these injustices, shift the narrative from individual shame or blame to systemic root causes and transform our society.

Rehabilitation Through The Arts (RTA)

Rehabilitation Through the Arts uses the transformative power of the arts to help people in prison develop skills to unlock their potential and to succeed in the larger community upon release.  RTA operates arts programs in NYS prisons in the Hudson Valley, serving over 200 incarcerated men and women. More than 800 prisoners have participated in RTA since it began, and hundreds have been released. Fewer than 5% of RTA participants have returned to prison within three years of release.

NDRC.org

NDRC (National Resource Defense Council) continues to work to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities, and to prevent special interests from undermining public interests. They combine the expertise of scientists, lawyers, and advocates with the power of more than three million members and online activists to confront our planet’s most pressing problems.

RIVERKEEPER.org

Riverkeeper has fought to clean up and reclaim New York’s Hudson River for over 50 years by guarding the waterway, seeking out polluters, defending clean drinking water, and finding solutions. They also work to ensure that over nine million New Yorkers have clean, safe drinking water.

SEEDING SOVEREIGNTY.org

Seeding Sovereignty rallies behind Indigenous-led environmental and climate justice movements fighting for land sovereignty. Indigenous communities are on the frontlines battling to protect living forests, waterways and resist extractive projects for us all.

We seed paths of land, body, community, cultural, and political sovereignty by bringing queer and women-led, empowerment-focused, and intentional collaboration to the forefront of a movement to protect people and preserve our planet.

We hold in our vision a world where experiences, networks, and collective wisdom of those outside the patriarchy rise together and turn the tide on the climate crisis, poverty, and ongoing systemic inequities—where exploitation of our planet for profit, cultural erasure and oppression, and violence against kin is ended.

SPLCenter.org

SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center) is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people.

8BillionTrees.com

8 Billion Trees carries out large-scale tree planting and tree conservation operations to fuel positive environmental change and defend habitats for animals, while also caring for displaced and hurt animals by utilizing wildlife sanctuaries and veterinary clinics focused in devastated and deforested areas.

SURJ.org

SURJStanding Up for Racial Justice was founded in the wake of the election of President Barack Obama in 2009. We are a national network of groups and individuals organizing white people for racial and economic justice. Our story is one branch of a deep history of white people who have answered the call to choose “the other America.” SURJ has its roots in the call from the Black liberation movement in the mid 1960’s. From the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to the Black Panther Party, Black leaders in the civil rights struggle have continually asked white people to organize for racial justice in white communities — the places where the support for racism lives.

SIERRACLUB.org

Sierra Club works hard to defend everyone’s right to a healthy world and to advance climate solutions. They’ve built a strong national community of volunteers, advocates, and grassroots activists who show up when and where it counts. They also work with and support companies that know strong values are a part of smart business.

GREENPEACE.org

Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future.
